Fluorescent Multilayer Disc (FMD)

ABSTRACT

Compact discs were a revolutionary product at its time and influenced many spheres of human activity. People started recording music of high quality, which didn’t get worse with the time as it happens to be on tape. As soon as CDs appeared in computer industry they immediately became an undoubted helper both for users and for programmers. The latter were able to increase volume of their program products by adding video and audio elements etc. Later discs were used for digital video (VideoCD).

But technologies are progressing. Data are growing faster and faster. A usual CD is far not enough (640 MBytes). So, there appeared DVD technology. Of course we are happy with those 17 GBytes that can be kept on one DVD disc, but this is a limiting point. So we need a completely new method of storing information on portable data medium. And at last, the company Constellation 3D demonstrates a new format: FMD (Fluorescent Multilayer Disk), which can provide us with a staggering 140 GB of storage space seems to be an enticing solution for the storage-hungry masses.

Audio CAPTCHA: Existing solutions assessment and a new implementation for VoIP telephony

ABSTRACT

SPam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) is a potential source of future annoyance in Voice over IP (VoIP) systems. A typical way to launch a SPIT attack is the use of an automated procedure (i.e., bot), which generates calls and produces unsolicited audio messages. A known way to protect against SPAM is a Reverse Turing Test, called CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computer and Humans Apart). In this paper, we evaluate existing audio CAPTCHA, as this type of format is more suitable for VoIP systems, to help them fight bots. To do so, we first suggest specific attributes-requirements that an audio CAPTCHA should meet in order to be effective. Then, we evaluate this set of popular audio CAPTCHA, and demonstrate that there is no existing implementation suit-able enough for VoIP environments. Next, we develop and implement a new audio CAPTCHA, which is suitable for SIP-based VoIP telephony. Finally, the new CAPTCHA is tested against users and bots and demonstrated to be efficient.

Bubble sensing

ABSTRACT

We propose bubble-sensing, a new sensor network abstraction that allows mobile phone users to create a binding between sensing tasks and the physical world at locations of interest, that remains active for a duration set by the user. We envision mobile phones being able to affix sensing task bubbles at places of interest and then receive sensed data as it becomes available in a delay-tolerant fashion, in essence, creating a living documentary of places of interest in the physical world. The system relies on other mobile phones that opportunistically pass through bubble-sensing locations to acquire tasks and do the sensing on behalf of the initiator, and deliver the data to the bubble-sensing server for retrieval by the user who initiated the task.

We describe an implementation of the bubble-sensing system using sensor-enabled mobile phones, specifically, Nokia’s N80 and N95 (with GPS, accelerometers, microphone, camera). Task bubbles are maintained at locations through the interaction of ”bubble carriers”, which carry the sensing task into the area of interest, and ”bubble anchors”, which maintain the task bubble in the area when the bubble carrier is no longer present. In our implementation, bubble carriers and bubble anchors implement a number of simple mobile phone based protocols that refresh the task bubble state as new mobile phones move through the area. Phones communicate using the local Ad-Hoc 802.11g radio to transfer task state and maintain the task in the region of interest. This task bubble state is ephemeral and times out when no bubble carriers or bubble anchors are in the area. Our design is resilient to periods when no mobiles pass through the bubble area and is capable of ‘‘reloading” the task into the bubble region.

Model checking for Securing E-commerce transaction

ABSTRACT

The rapid growth of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has necessitated the development of e-commerce protocols. These protocols ensure the confidentiality and integrity of information exchanged. In addition, researchers have identified other desirable properties, such as, money atomicity, goods atomicity and validated receipt that must be satisfied by e-commerce protocols. This seminar shows how model checking can be used to obtain an assurance about the existence of these properties in an e-commerce protocol. It is essential that these desirable properties be satisfied, even in the presence of site or communication failure. Using the model checker we evaluate which failures cause the violation of one or more of the properties. The results of the analysis are then used to propose a mechanism that handles the failures to make the protocol failure resilient.

Performance Evaluation of Efficient and Reliable Routing Protocols for Fixed-Power Sensor Networks

ABSTRACT

A Fixed–power wireless sensor networks are cost effective and prevalent, and they are facing lots of problems like RF interference, node failure from environmental noise and energy constraints. A routing protocol for Fixed – power wireless sensor networks must overcome these problems. Because it have to achieve reliability, energy efficiency and scalability in message delivery. In this paper, we propose an efficient and reliable routing protocol (EAR) that achieves reliable and scalable performance with minimal compromise of energy efficiency. The routing design of EAR is based on four parameters – expected path length and a weighted combination of distance traversed, energy levels and link transmission success history, to dynamically determine and maintain the best routes. We will evaluate the performance of efficient and reliable routing protocols for such networks.

Security Challenge and Defense in VoIP Infrastructures

ABSTRACT

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has become a popular alternative to traditional public-switched telephone network (PSTN) networks that provides advantages of low cost and flexible advanced “digital” features. The flexibility of the VoIP system and the convergence of voice and data networks brings with it additional security risks. These are in addition to the common security concerns faced by the underlying IP data network facilities that a VoIP system relies on. The result being that the VoIP network further complicates the security assurance mission faced by enterprises employing this technology. It is time to document various security issues that a VoIP infrastructure may face and analyze the challenges and solutions that may guide future research and development efforts. In this paper, we examine and investigate the concerns and requirements of VoIP security. After a thorough review of security issues and defense mechanisms, we focus on attacks and countermeasures unique to VoIP systems that are essential for current and future VoIP implantations. Then, we analyze two popular industry best practices for securing VoIP networks and conclude this paper with further discussion on future research directions. This paper aims to direct future research efforts and to offer helpful guidelines for practitioners.

An Energy Aware Framework for Dynamic Software Management in Mobile Computing Systems

ABSTRACT

Energy efficiency is a very important and challenging issue for resource-constrained mobile computers. Here, a novel dynamic software management (DSOM) framework to improve battery utilization is introduced. DSOM module is designed and implemented in user space, independent of the operating system. DSOM explores quality-of-service adaptation to reduce system energy and employs a priority based pre-emption policy for multiple applications to avoid competition for limited energy resources. Software energy macromodels for mobile applications are employed to predict energy demand at each QoS level, so that DSOM module is able to select the best possible trade-off between energy conservation and application QoS; it also honors the priority desired by the user. Experimental results on some mobile applications like video player, speech recognizer and voice-over-IP show that this approach can meet user specified task oriented goals and significantly improve battery utilization.

LOGARITHMIC KEYING

ABSTRACT

Consider a communication network where each process needs to securely exchange messages with its neighboring processes. In this network, each sent message is encrypted using one or more symmetric keys that are shared only between two processes: – the process that sends the message and the neighboring process that receives the message. A straightforward scheme for assigning symmetric keys to the different processes in such a network is to assign each process O(d) keys, where d is the maximum number of neighbors of any process in the network.
This report presents a more efficient scheme for assigning symmetric keys to the different processes in a communication network. This scheme is referred to as logarithmic keying, which assigns O(log d)symmetric keys to each process in the network. We show that logarithmic keying can be used in rich classes of communication networks that include star networks, dense bipartite networks.

Image Compression Using Wedgelets

ABSTRACT

Images typically contain strong geometric features, such as edges, that impose a structure on pixel values and wavelet coefficients. Modeling the joint coherent behavior of wavelet coefficients is difficult, and standard image coders fail to fully exploit this geometric regularity. i.e. Most wavelet-based image coders fail to model the joint coherent behavior of wavelet coefficients near edges. Wedgelet is introduced as a geometric tool for image compression. Wedgelets offer a convenient parameterization for the edges in an image, Wedgelets offer piecewiselinear approximations of edge contours and can be efficiently encoded.
