ABSTRACT

This seminar includes the theory, design and construction of a haptic display for creating texture sensations through variations in surface friction. Ultra sonic frequency, low amplitude vibrations between two flat plates have been shown to create a squeeze film of air between the two plate surfaces thereby reducing the friction. Here, it is shown that a reduction of friction will also occur between a human finger and a vibrating plate. Thus, a vibrating plate can serve as a haptic interface. The amplitude of vibration can also be correlated to the amount of friction reduction the plate and the finger. Varying the surface friction between the finger and the haptic interface is a way of indirectly controlling shear forces on the finger during active exploration. Using finger position and velocity feedback on the display allows for the creation of spatial texture sensations.

Impedance Glottography

ABSTRACT

Impedance Glottography is noninvasive measurement of the time variation of the degree of contact between the vibrating vocal folds during voice production. The aspect of contact being measured is called the vocal fold contact area (VFCA). To measure VFCA, the device used is called impedance glottograph. The device is also called electroglottograph or laryngograph. The principle of operation of device, the waveform obtained, an algorithm for determination of pitch period is discussed. EGG waveform for various voice qualities, drawbacks in EGG and various noises present are described. Concept of multichannel EGG and applications of electroglottography are discussed.

Audio CAPTCHA: Existing solutions assessment and a new implementation for VoIP telephony

ABSTRACT

SPam over Internet Telephony (SPIT) is a potential source of future annoyance in Voice over IP (VoIP) systems. A typical way to launch a SPIT attack is the use of an automated procedure (i.e., bot), which generates calls and produces unsolicited audio messages. A known way to protect against SPAM is a Reverse Turing Test, called CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computer and Humans Apart). In this paper, we evaluate existing audio CAPTCHA, as this type of format is more suitable for VoIP systems, to help them fight bots. To do so, we first suggest specific attributes-requirements that an audio CAPTCHA should meet in order to be effective. Then, we evaluate this set of popular audio CAPTCHA, and demonstrate that there is no existing implementation suit-able enough for VoIP environments. Next, we develop and implement a new audio CAPTCHA, which is suitable for SIP-based VoIP telephony. Finally, the new CAPTCHA is tested against users and bots and demonstrated to be efficient.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

ABSTRACT

As the U.S. government enacts new regulations for automotive fuel economy and emissions, the continuously variable transmission, or CVT, continues to emerge as a key technology for improving the fuel efficiency of automobiles with internal combustion (IC) engines. CVTs use infinitely adjustable drive ratios instead of discrete gears to attain optimal engine performance. Since the engine always runs at the most efficient number of revolutions per minute for a given vehicle speed, CVT-equipped vehicles attain better gas mileage and acceleration than cars with traditional transmissions.
CVTs are not new to the automotive world, but their torque capabilities and reliability have been limited in the past. New developments in gear reduction and manufacturing have led to ever-more-robust CVTs, which in turn allows them to be used in more diverse automotive applications. CVTs are also being developed in conjunction with hybrid electric vehicles. As CVT development continues, costs will be reduced further and performance will continue to increase, which in turn makes further development and application of CVT technology desirable.
This paper evaluates the current state of CVTs and upcoming research and development, set in the context of past development and problems traditionally associated with CVTs. The underlying theories and mechanisms are also discussed.

ABSTRACT

The seminar entitled “Control of point of operation hazards”, emphasizes on the usage of a wide variety of devices to protect against the inherent hazards that are present, when the material to be worked on is fed into the machine.
The elimination of hazards from shafting, belting, gearing and other risks is a problem of completely guarding the hazardous condition. This generally requires that the point of hazard be substantially enclosed, screened, barricaded or otherwise protected so that persons working cannot inadvertently does not come in contact with the danger point. The ideal means for protecting machine operators from point of operation hazards would be to design the machine so that its operation points are inaccessible to the operator.

Model checking for Securing E-commerce transaction

ABSTRACT

The rapid growth of electronic commerce (e-commerce) has necessitated the development of e-commerce protocols. These protocols ensure the confidentiality and integrity of information exchanged. In addition, researchers have identified other desirable properties, such as, money atomicity, goods atomicity and validated receipt that must be satisfied by e-commerce protocols. This seminar shows how model checking can be used to obtain an assurance about the existence of these properties in an e-commerce protocol. It is essential that these desirable properties be satisfied, even in the presence of site or communication failure. Using the model checker we evaluate which failures cause the violation of one or more of the properties. The results of the analysis are then used to propose a mechanism that handles the failures to make the protocol failure resilient.
